How do I focus a fundraising committee?

A common fundraising question

Dear Dr. Copitch,

My Boy Scout troop needs to raise funds for the bare basics. The six parents that volunteered to be on the fundraising committee are all real nice, but after three meetings we are getting nowhere. Lots of ideas but no agreement. I’m concerned that we are building resentment but no fundraising plan.

Alberto, Oklahoma City, OK

Dear Alberto,

You are not alone. This is a very common problem for fundraising committees of all sizes.

The positive news is that most groups can get from words to action with just a little help.

Committee Chair

Even small groups need a chairperson. The role of the chairperson is to keep the meeting going forward. Have a quick election or maybe you should ask the rest of the group to vote you in as chair.

For larger groups and organizations the chairperson’s role and how the meetings are run can get pretty complicated. A traditional way of running an organized meeting is clearly explained in the business classic, Robert's Rules of Order.

Once you have a chairperson, next comes nominations of fundraising ideas. As you know, FundraisingIdeasThatWork.com is full of fundraising ideas. For small groups, there may be so many fundraising ideas, it sometimes can become difficult to choose.

So many fundraising ideas, which one is best?

Many groups get caught up into which idea is the best fundraiser for the effort. Often this causes lots of headaches for all involved. Instead of aiming for the best, I advise doing the easiest that meets your group’s needs. The goal is to get the fundraiser working for your group.

Your fundraising committee must keep its F.O.C.U.S.

What I mean by “focus” is:

Follow

One

Course

Until

Success

Once your group understands the goal is to raise the necessary funds for your good cause, staying on the path to fundraising success gets much easier. When members of the group can leave their egos outside of the meeting, and focus on the good cause, caring people can get a lot done in a short amount of time.
